Lilly’s apprenticeship journey

As we continue to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (NAW), we hear from Lilly Chipchase, who joined us in July 2022 as an trainee accounts apprentice.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

“I chose an apprenticeship as I wanted to gain experience in the industry while having an employer that supports me with my studies. Having hands on experience while working towards my qualification was something that was important to me as the university lifestyle just didn’t suit me.”

How have you found it so far?

“I have found the apprenticeship really enjoyable. I am supported with my studies and have time during the work day to work on anything that is needed from me for my apprenticeship whilst also working on clients accounts and tax returns. This has allowed me to develop my career in accountancy and now manage a small portfolio of clients myself.”

What have you learnt so far?

“I have completed Level 3 AAT and I’m now studying Level 4 AAT, which I hope to complete by the end of the year! Throughout the past two and a half years as an apprentice I have learnt many skills that are needed in an accountant but also in a good employee.

“I have learnt how to train other members of staff and take responsibility for them whilst also keeping on track with deadlines that need to be met both internally and externally. I have also learnt how to work both independently and effectively in a team to get the job done.”

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to someone else?

I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who wants to gain experience whilst working towards their qualification and also receiving a salary. It’s the perfect way to make your way into the profession and learn the key skills required from the very beginning.”

Lilly’s apprenticeship journey

NAW celebrates everyone who contributes to the success of apprenticeships and skills across the countries.

The theme for this year is Skills for Life, encouraging everyone to consider and celebrate how apprenticeships and skills help individuals to develop rewarding careers.

All this week, we’ll be sharing different employees apprenticeship journeys and how it’s helped them in their career – so keep your eyes peeled for more stories!
