My accountancy apprenticeship journey

Hear from Jaime Carlin below, who recently joined us as an apprentice accountant, as she shares how she’s finding her apprenticeship so far.

“I joined Gascoynes in August this year on an apprenticeship as a trainee accountant. So far, I’ve really enjoyed learning on the job and everyone has been so friendly, welcoming and supportive!

I chose an accountancy apprenticeship as I liked the idea of earning straight away while I studied. You learn on the job and you put what you’ve learnt in the classroom into practice straight away.

I also had just over a month working before I started college, which really helped me get an understanding of the basics. That really helped me settle into college and grasp accountancy basics a lot quicker than I would have if I was solely studying.

So far, I’ve learnt all about debits and credits, basic accountancy knowledge and learning how to use lots of different accountancy software.

With an apprenticeship, you get all the benefits of going to university but you earn while you learn, and gain practical experience in the job.

It also helps that you build great relationships with people who are already doing the job you would like to do in the future! They support you with any questions you may have on what you are learning and you get to meet lots of people in the industry you want to work in too.

I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone. It really helps give you the practical experience to boost you skills and experience to help further your career in the future! It’s a really good step into the working world from school, as it feels familiar as you’re both working and learning.

My advice to anyone looking to study an apprenticeship, would be to have a rough idea on what industry you want to work in before you apply, so you make sure it’s the right career path for you.”
