Antoine’s Journey

Hear from Antoine Berthillot, who joined us as an Accounts Assistant in March 2026, as he shares his experience working at Gascoynes.

Why did you choose a career in accountancy?

I chose accountancy because I’ve always enjoyed mathematics and working with numbers. Growing up, my parents owned a bakery, so I was exposed to the world of business from an early age. I enjoyed listening to them discuss different ways they could make the business more efficient and improve how it operated. I’ve also always found tax interesting. I don’t particularly enjoy paying it, so I enjoy looking for legitimate and effective ways to reduce a person’s tax liability.

Antoine’s Journey

What were you looking for in your first role after university?

I was looking for a supportive working environment where I could develop my skills, gain practical experience and get the support I needed while studying for my exams. I also wanted a role where there was plenty of opportunity to learn and grow as an accountant.

What made Gascoynes stand out from other employers?

The location suited me well, which was certainly one of the deciding factors. Gascoynes was also recommended to me by my employer during my placement year, who described it as a great place to work.  The excellent Google reviews backed this up and gave me confidence that Gascoynes would be a good place to develop my career.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in accountancy?

I would recommend having good people and communication skills. As a certified accountant, you will spend a lot of time speaking with clients, both over the phone and face to face, so being able to communicate clearly and build good relationships is important. It is also useful to have a basic understanding of tax rates and accountancy laws, although much of this knowledge can be developed through experience and training. Finally, I would recommend considering an apprenticeship rather than going to university, as you can gain valuable practical experience while working towards your qualifications.

What do you enjoy most about working at Gascoynes?

I really enjoy the pleasant working environment and the people I work with. My colleagues are friendly, approachable and always willing to help, which makes Gascoynes a great place to work. I particularly value being part of a supportive and collaborative team where everyone is invested in each other’s development.
