Toby’s apprenticeship journey

Hear from Toby Richardson below, who joined us as an apprentice accountant in September 2025, as he shares how he’s finding his apprenticeship so far.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted to get a head start by gaining experience in a professional working environment. Something I wouldn’t have had through the traditional university route. The idea of learning whilst earning really appealed to me, as it allows me to develop both academically and professionally.”

How have you found it so far?

I’ve enjoyed the apprenticeship so far especially getting to know all the staff and taking part in the staff day – it was a great opportunity to get to know everyone. I am enjoying settling into my role while learning more about how the business operates.

What have you learnt so far?

I’ve learnt a lot already about my responsibilities within customer service, including taking client calls, sending documents for signature, and managing incoming post. Alongside this, I’ve started learning the basics of accounting through AAT Level 2 and have begun working on simple client tasks using QuickBooks and Silverfin. Studying and gaining hands-on experience has really helped me to apply what I’m learning to the job.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to someone else?

I think an apprenticeship is a great opportunity for anyone who isn’t sure about university but still wants to work towards a professional qualification and build a career. It gives you a real insight into the business from day one. I’ve also found that mixing theory with practical experience has helped me learn and develop my skills much faster.
