Abu’s apprenticeship journey

This week marks National Apprenticeship Week (NAW)!

NAW celebrates everyone who contributes to the success of apprenticeships and skills across the countries.

The theme for this year is Skills for Life, encouraging everyone to consider and celebrate how apprenticeships and skills help individuals to develop rewarding careers.

All this week, we’ll be sharing different employees apprenticeship journeys and how it’s helped them in their career.

Today we hear from Abu Uddin, who joined us in August 2024 as an trainee accounts apprentice.

Abu’s apprenticeship journey

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

“I chose an apprenticeship because it was more intriguing to me than staying in education full time. I wanted to explore something new after secondary school and college, rather than continuing to solely study.

“An apprenticeship really appealed to me for many reasons, getting real time experience in the job sector, gaining both on and off the job learning, along with a salary and no student loans to pay back if I went university.”

How have you found it so far?

I’ve really been enjoying it so far, everyone has been welcoming and friendly which has helped me to settle in nicely.

My colleagues have been very supportive with any help I need for work or college. This has helped me enhance my skills in the workplace, which will help me in my future career.”

What have you learnt so far?

“So far, I’ve had training on how to use Quickbooks, Xero, Sage and Silverfin which are all key software’s we use day-to-day within the office.

“I go to college once a week, which improves my knowledge with accountancy and it syncs nicely with the work I do within the office and makes my work more efficient.”

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to someone else?

I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to someone else, but this does depend on the job sector you wish to go into. An apprenticeship gives a boost in your career, rather than going to university, as you will be gaining work experience along with learning which I find is the best way to go.”
